Emerge Boise: College and Community Experience

Boise State - Field of Blue

The Emerge Boise experience for college students and young adults in transition might start off with the image of that great blue field, but the opportunities both at Boise State University and in the community are the core!  Our life coaching for college students and support for young adults preparing for an entry or return to college begins with integrating into the life of the community through work, volunteering, internships and academics.  Our college life coaches help students tap into the resources that allow them to pursue their interests, develop their skills, and prepare for the future.  Students are encouraged to take advantage of programs like the outdoor adventure department at Boise State University, the horticulture program at College of Western Idaho, or volunteering at the Agency for New Americans. As we say, “Experience College Success (as defined by you, the student!) with Emerge in Boise, Idaho, or on Your Campus.  Through our remote coaching model, that includes  staff visits to students, we can help create the same positive dynamics on any campus utilizing local resources and ongoing communication!

Boise State and the Emerge College Experience

Emerge College Success Coaching provides students with the support and mentoring to make the transition onto a major college campus.  With all that Boise State University has to offer, in addition to the great opportunities for young adults in the Boise area, students who have faced challenges such as learning disabilities, ADHD, anxiety or just not fitting in can take the steps toward college success.  We all know about Bronco Nation and the outstanding accomplishments of Boise State Football, but take a look at what else is going on in Boise:  The Boise Weekly, College of Western Idaho’s vocational programs, and, of course, Bosie State University. College bound students are able to transition mid year  or mid term through the Emerge program’s ability to create internship and gap year experiences in the community.

Emerging or Merging Young Adults

As we continue to work with young adults and college students, either those attending our Boise program or through our college success coaching at a distance, we have begun to realize that this generation of students has a mix of needs ranging from the failure to launch and difficulties with emancipation to the need for more integrated relationships with parents, siblings and peers.  The Emerge model has always focused on students gaining the skills necessary for independent living, self advocacy, and overcoming the challenges they have faced through their school experiences.  Now, we are equally aware of the need to apply a more integrative approach to a student’s program and coaching, including ongoing and consistent communication with parents, more integration with siblings and peers.  As the “we’re all in this together” generation, Millennials thrive in situations where they actively are able to work together, form teams, and develop collaborative relationships – starting with our Emerge coaching and mentoring.  As I have reminded students this fall, college is a “team sport,” no one gets ahead going it alone!
